Why Fifth & Root Celebrates Hemp!

In case you didn’t know, hemp is a phenomenal plant. Not only is it capable of being used for paper, textiles, and food (hemp seeds anyone?), but it’s also packed full of CBD. That’s right, the very CBD we use in our skincare products is harvested from industrial hemp. That’s why we think it’s so important to celebrate Hemp!

Truly, we owe a lot to this plant. We strive to only use certified organic ingredients and to keep our products as clean and nourishing as possible. That means only using premium, organic full-spectrum CBD oil from industrial hemp.

Not sure what that means? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the details...

Fall Head-Over-Heels in Love with Hemp!

There still seems to be some confusion surrounding the hemp plant, but we’re here to set the record straight. We’re head-over-heels in love with hemp, and you should be too 😏

Why Fifth & Root Celebrates National Hemp Month - Fifth & Root

Towards the end of 2018, industrial hemp was finally legalized (yay!). While it is a member of the plant genus known as “cannabis,” hemp doesn’t have enough of the mind-altering compounds to get you high. It does, however, have a lot of CBD (or cannabidiol). This non-psychoactive compound has a long list of helpful properties that make it particularly useful.

In fact, hemp has several non-psychoactive compounds that each have their own list of perks. This can consist of other cannabinoids like CBC and CBG, but it also means terpenes. If you haven’t heard of terpenes yet, get ready to have your mind blown.

Terpenes are organic hydrocarbons found in most plants. Maybe that doesn’t immediately sound all that ming blowing, but keep reading. Not only are these compounds responsible for the aroma and flavor of most plants and spices, but they also have an array of medicinal benefits and can even boost your mood and sense of well-being. How cool is that!

It’s important to note, however, that not all hemp products are created equal. So, if you want as much of that hemp plant magic as possible, make sure your CBD/Hemp products check off all the items on this list:

Organic                             Check!
Clean Ingredients             Check!
            Full Spectrum                   Double Check!

If you’re a bit lost on that last item, no worries. When something uses full-spectrum hemp oil or full-spectrum CBD, it means it includes all the natural cannabinoids and terpenes found in the plant.  That’s the best way to ensure you’re getting the most out of your products.

When you use the whole plant, the ingredients work together in what’s known as the entourage effect. Basically, it means the results are greater than the sum of their parts. When different cannabinoids and terpenes work together, they can have stronger effects than they would on their own. See why we call it plant magic?

But how exactly does your body, and specifically your skin, interact with these high-vibing ingredients? That’s where your endocannabinoid system comes in...

Your Skin Has Its Own Endocannabinoid System

If terpenes didn’t manage to blow your mind, this certainly will!

Your body produces its own cannabinoids (known as endocannabinoids). In fact, it has an entire system whose sole purpose is to promote balance and well-being. This Endocannabinoid System (ECS) uses endocannabinoids to balance out any systems that are a little out of wack.

Drops of Sunshine Revitalizing Wellness Tincture - Fifth & Root

So, whenever you ingest a CBD Oil or Tincture you’re giving your ECS more tools with which to complete its many tasks. That might mean less inflammation, a better mood, a balanced sleep cycle, and even better skin. We’ll be the first to admit that the “better skin” thing is our favorite part.

What’s even cooler, is that your skin actually has its own endocannabinoid system. The purpose of your cutaneous ECS is the same--balance! It helps make sure your skin is replenishing itself properly and maintaining its strength so it can keep protecting you. If your skins ECS isn’t doing its job properly you might notice acne, dryness, itchy or irritated skin, dullness, eczema, and more.

Luckily, using skincare products with full-spectrum CBD can give your skin the boost it needs to stay balanced. In fact, there are several benefits to your skin...

Benefits of Hemp for Your Skin

We use both full-spectrum CBD and Hemp Seed Oil (the oil from pressed hemp seeds) in our products because the benefits are seriously out of this world! This isn’t a complete list, but it’s certainly a good start.

CBD Balances Cortisol

When we’re stressed, our bodies release cortisol. While it’s useful in the short-term, too much cortisol encourages a process in your skin known as glycation (collagen damage, elastin breakdown, increased dryness, and more). Basically, it ages your skin. Luckily, CBD helps keep your skin looking fresh, vibrant, and less stressed.

CBD is a More Powerful Antioxidant than Vitamin E and Vitamin C

Adrenalin is also released whenever we’re stressed out, which can leech oxygen from your skin. The lack of oxygen in your skin can lead to toxin build-up and even cellulite. In the past, Vitamins E and C were the gold standard antioxidants, but CBD outshines them both! By using CBD skincare products, you’ll literally be helping your skin breathe better.

CBD is an Acne-Fighting Super Compound

Excess cortisol and oxidative stress can make your skin a breeding ground for bacteria. However, CBD not only slows excess oil production, but it also has antibacterial properties that give your skin a boost in the fight against acne!

In case you didn’t catch it, stressed skin clearly has a hard time looking and feeling its best.  So, while using a CBD supplement is enough for some, combining it with CBD infused skincare can provide a healing veil of protection for extra stressed-out skin. Take our High Glow for example...

That means dull and dry skin is a thing of the past!
