8 Secrets to Dewy Summer Skin
There’s a fine line between dewy and oily-looking skin, but you can always tell once that line’s been crossed. Read on and discover our 8 secrets to dewy summer skin!
As soon as summer rolls around, you immediately start to see words like glowing, glassy, and dewy. But what exactly do these terms mean and how do you get this trendy summer look? Whatever you’d like to call it, it’s ALL about healthy and hydrated skin. Since National Hydration Day is just around the corner (June 23rd to be exact), we felt this was the perfect opportunity to talk all things “dewy.”
To us, dewy skin means an even complexion that looks fresh and clean with a subtle sheen. However, this look requires a delicate touch. If you’re too heavy-handed, you’ll end up with oily skin instead of the fresh-from-the-spa look you’re going for. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Read on and discover our top eight secrets to dewy summer skin.
Keep Your Skin and Body Hydrated With LOTS of Water
Believe it or not, but your skin tells you TONS about your internal health. When you’re particularly stressed or hormonal, you might get acne. Not getting enough sleep? Your complexion will likely look dull and dry. Think of it this way--your skin is an external indicator of your internal health. So, even if your summer won’t involve trips to the beach, staying hydrated is SO important!
Plus, that whole “you just need 8 glasses of water a day” thing is seriously outdated. Consider that your minimum requirement. In reality, you might need much more for a healthy body and hydrated skin.
You don’t necessarily have to chug a gallon of water (although your skin will probably thank you), but consider keeping a reusable water bottle on hand so you can conveniently sip whenever the thirst strikes! Plus, as an added bonus, staying hydrated means you’re less likely to drink sugary, caffeine-loaded beverages or unhealthy snacks.
Speaking of snacks...
Snack on Water-Dense Foods
We love this tip all year, but it’s particularly important during the hot, summer months. Here’s a list of some of our favorite water-dense foods for quick, nourishing snacks:
- Bell Peppers
As an added bonus, the majority of these items also have skin-beautifying vitamins and minerals. Dewy skin, here we come!
SKIP the Super-Steamy Showers
If you’re like us, you cherish those sauna-like showers that help revive you in the morning or relax you in the evening. While we seriously love the steam, it could be drying your skin out.
Dewy skin requires a healthy moisture barrier. Sadly, showering in hot water until you’re lobster-red can strip the natural, healthy fats and oils from your skin. We’re not necessarily advocating ice-cold showers (although there are several benefits to those), but consider scaling back the temperature on your shower time.
DON’T Skip Toner
If your skin tends to be more oily, then don’t skip the toner! Admittedly, there’s some debate about whether toner is necessary for all skin types. When it comes to dewy skin, however, a toner will keep your complexion looking supple, pores tight, and help balance the pH level of your skin.
After cleansing, apply toner to a cotton ball and gently sweep it across your face. This helps to remove any last bits of dirt and impurities that may have stuck around after washing. You can do this in the morning, evening, or both. It just depends on your skin. Different skin types need different product layering strategies, but toner will almost always be applied after cleansing and before moisturizing.
Protect Skin With Enhanced Moisturizers
Your skin protects you from pollution, germs, dirt, you name it! But it can’t do that if your moisture barrier is compromised. When that happens, you’ll likely notice dry, flaky skin and you could even have a more difficult time ridding your skin of bacterial acne. To nourish that barrier and get beautiful, dewy skin, you’ll want to use enhanced moisturizers! That means products designed to repair and heal dry, sensitive skin while soothing and hydrating.
Our secret to enhanced moisture is to combine our Second Nature Calming Facial Moisturizer with 2-3 drops of the High Glow Radiance Facial Oil. The former is a lightweight daily moisturizer designed to protect your skin from pollution, dirt, and blue light while ingredients like CBD and Plant Peptides soothe and reduce inflammation. Combine that with the blend of seven nourishing oils in High Glow, and you have the perfect recipe for enhanced moisture and a fresh, dewy complexion.
Balance Skin With CBD
If that last tip has you worried about oil production, fear not! Both of those products have a healthy dose of CBD to quench cortisol production, fight inflammation, and bring balance to stressed skin. The reason CBD is so beneficial is because it works with your skin’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Your body produces its own cannabinoids (known as endocannabinoids). In fact, it has an entire system whose sole purpose is to promote balance and well-being. The ECS uses endocannabinoids to balance out any systems that are a little out of wack. That includes oil production! Since CBD is so structurally similar to your natural endocannabinoids, it gives your ECS a much-needed boost.
If dewy skin is on your summer checklist, make sure you’re adding CBD-infused skincare into your routine (Pssst! Pump up the volume on your CBD routine with a CBD Wellness Tincture).
Exfoliate, Exfoliate, EXFOLIATE
Whether you prefer physical or chemical exfoliants, this is a non-negotiable step for dewy skin because they help remove dead skin cells! While that might sound kind of scary, this is an insanely important part of any skincare routine.
Your skin is constantly creating new skin cells to replace old ones. The issue is that your skin doesn’t really have a way of getting rid of these old cells. Too much buildup of dead skin cells can lead to rough patches, flaky skin, clogged pores, and an uneven skin tone. If there’s enough dead skin, it can even make it harder for other products to absorb properly. We don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like dewy-skin material.
Luckily, a gentle exfoliation step can quickly clear most of these issues up. Plus, on top of removing dead skin cells, exfoliants help in other ways too. Exfoliants help boost collagen production for healthier skin with a smoother, more youthful appearance. Now THAT sounds like dewy skin city!
NEVER Skip Sun Protection
While tanned skin has long been the trademark of summertime, we’re into HEALTHY skin! So, whether you’re into SPF, hats, parasols, or a combination of all three, sun protection is pivotal. We’re not saying you can’t indulge in a bit of sunbathing, just make sure you’re protecting your skin as much as possible.
A sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to the UV rays of the sun. Technically, your body does have mechanisms to heal and even prevent the mutations caused by sunburns. Too much sun exposure, however, can make the damage irreparable. That means a rough or dry skin texture, uneven pigmentation, and early signs of aging. Definitely, not dewy.
If a bronzed body is a MUST for your summer looks, here are a few things to remember:
- You can still get a tan while wearing sunblock, so DON’T skip that step when sunbathing.
- Sunless tanning products are widely available (just make sure to read the instructions to avoid streaks).
- Bucket hats are trending and look surprisingly good on a wide variety of face shapes.
- If you DO get burned, remember these three things: aloe vera is your friend, drink EXTRA water, and avoid sun exposure until your skin is healed.
