5 Ways to Chill Out and Raise Your Vibrations

When life gets hectic and uncertain, it easily affects your outlook and energy. But it doesn’t have to! Read on to discover new ways to chill out and raise your vibrations!

Three black boxes with the phrases

We’ve all been there. We’re moving about our day with relative ease and optimism when WHAM! Something comes out of left field and completely derails us. Maybe it’s a dismissive text from your crush or maybe just lots of little things that have built up over time. No matter what, anything that harshes your vibe (brings your emotional energy down) is no good.

But what are you supposed to do? You can’t avoid stressful situations forever. To that, we’d like to quote the poet, Rupi Kaur, who said, “Really, at the end of the day, the only thing you can control is yourself.”

This is, by no means, a new concept. But today the idea that we have much control over anything comes into question a lot. The one thing we do have control over, however, is the way we respond to the world around us.

Life will, inevitably, throw us a curveball every now and then. That’s why it’s so important to have calming practices or rituals that will help you chill out and keep vibing.

What is Vibrational Energy and How Does it Effect You?

If talking about “good vibes” immediately makes you think of incense and meditating...you’re not wrong. That’s just not the whole picture. It’s all about a healthy mind/body/spirit balance, and that might look like something different for everyone.

While you might think it’s a bunch of mystical mumbo-jumbo, it’s actually rooted in physics! Einstein taught us that all matter is made up of energy and this energy is constantly vibrating at different frequencies. What’s really fascinating is that our emotions and thoughts influence the vibrational frequencies around us.

The idea is that our energy vibrates at a higher frequency when we’re happy, calm, and at peace. This energy feels light and alive! Conversely, when we’re depressed, anxious, or angry, we tend to exude lower vibrational frequencies which feel heavy and dense. There’s a constant ebb and flow of vibrational energy around us, and when we start to be conscious of it, we can start to influence it.

That’s what people mean when they say things like, “raise your vibrations” or “good vibes.” Once you become conscious of this energy and how it impacts your mental health and wellness, you can start to intentionally take control of your energy.

If you’re shaking your head and thinking, “So, I’m just supposed to wish myself out of a bad mood...” then think again! We never said it was easy, but with practice and intention, even the most anxious people can regain some sense of control when faced with stressors.

How Rituals Impact Your Vibrations

If you haven’t read our Ultimate Guide to Rituals, then click here for ALL the details. If you’re short on time, however, here’s what you need to know right now.

  • A ritual can be something as simple as quietly enjoying your morning cup of tea. They don’t have to be big, grand events.
  • The intentional aspect of rituals helps you develop mindfulness.
  • Rituals help us regulate our emotions, lessen anxiety, perform tasks better, and even create stronger social connections.

Mindfulness is the act of being aware of your feelings, sensations, energy, thoughts, and environment. This awareness isn’t rooted in judgment, but acceptance. So anything that helps you practice mindfulness also helps you start to tune in to your vibrational energy.

5 Ways to Chill Out and Raise Your Vibrations

If you don’t really know where to start, we’ve got your back. Below you’ll find a variety of different rituals or practices that are designed to easily fit into your everyday routine. We’ve found that the more practical these rituals are, the easier it is to remember them and to do them often. On the other hand, if it’s easier for you to get into the right head-space by chanting mantras while wearing a special outfit or something, be our guest!

The whole point is to figure out what works best for you, so you can control your energy and your life.

Develop Morning or Evening Routines

The time right when we wake up and right before we go to sleep is seriously underrated. The actions we take when we wake up can set the tone for the day, and the activities we do right before bed can determine the quality of sleep we’ll get. That being said, your routines might be drastically different from everyone else’s.

Maybe you like to literally hit the ground running in the morning by heading out for a job. Perhaps you prefer quiet contemplation over a soothing cup of chai tea. Plus, let’s not forget that you may have a morning and/or skincare routine. While these may sound like mundane tasks, if you go into them with the right mindset, they can help ground you and raise your vibrations.

Seriously, having a solid morning and/or evening routine can have a massive impact on your life. If you’re new to vibrational energy, this is a great way to get in the habit of assessing your mental state. Were you rehashing an argument with a friend during your run? Or were you enjoying the sunshine and fresh air? Were you focusing on your skin issues while applying your moisturizer, or were you envisioning how your products were infusing your skin with nutrients?

Your mind is SO powerful, and your daily habits are the perfect way to practice flexing your mental strength.

Nourish Your Body

Have you ever noticed how eating a bunch of junk food can make you feel like garbage? Yes, it’s oh so delicious while you’re eating it, but when your body doesn’t receive enough nutrients you can start to experience fatigue, brain fog, skin issues, and more. What exactly does this have to do with your mental health though? Surprisingly, a lot!

Johns Hopkins Medicine talks about the link between your digestion and overall wellness, and they specifically focus on a special gut-brain, known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). “The ENS may trigger big emotional shifts experienced by people coping with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional bowel problems such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, pain and stomach upset.”

Scientists originally thought that mood disorders like anxiety were the cause of these stomach issues. Now, however, they’re thinking it’s the other way around. And if that’s the case, we can help out the ENS by eating nutritious foods.

Don’t get us wrong, sometimes we NEED chocolate, pizza, or whatever. Being too restrictive with your nutrition comes with its own issues, but if the majority of your meals are nutritious then the odd treat here or there isn’t a big problem. You don’t have to give your eating habits a complete overhaul, but maybe slowly integrate more natural and less processed foods into your diet.

Over time you’ll start to notice better physical AND mental health, and when that happens you’ll have an easier time assessing your physical and mental states. Oh, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Throw some cucumber slices and mint leaves in it if you want extra vitamins and a boost of flavor, but every aspect of your life will benefit from more water.

Nourish Your Mind and Express Your Emotions

Many of us already do this whenever we’re conflicted or dealing with intense emotions. Have you ever chosen to watch a funny movie whenever life seems really intense? It literally helps to lighten your mood!

If that’s true though, then why do we sometimes choose to listen to sad music when we’re already sad? Great question! The reason we do this is that our emotions are important. Just because they’re painful or difficult, doesn’t mean we don’t need to process them fully. The trick is not to wallow in them for too long. Feel your emotions, express them in a healthy way, and then let them go.

One of the best ways to express your emotions is through some type of art or even through journaling. Whether you choose to pour your emotions into a song, a painting, or the words on a page, giving voice to your emotions helps you understand and release them. It’s about being in control of your mental state, as opposed to letting your emotions control you.

If you feel like your emotions are constantly throwing you for a loop, then integrating a meditation practice into your morning or evening routine is a great idea! Whether it’s just a few minutes or even a full hour, do what works for you. No matter what though, use it as a time to clear your thoughts and practice mindfulness.

Dance to get rid of stale energy - Fifth & Root

Move Your Body to Get Rid of Stale Energy

This one shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. Who hasn’t thrown an impromptu dance party in their kitchen to stave off boredom or frustration? Sometimes a simple walk in the fresh air can help you deal with anxiety and give you a better sense of purpose.

Many of us rely on an exercise routine. These routines not only keep our bodies physically fit and healthy, but they also act as a ritual that helps us maintain a sense of normalcy and lessen anxiety.

You don’t have to join a high-intensity cycling class, although you can if that’s your thing. Things like yoga, jogging, Zumba, or even just dancing around your house can be enough to get your blood flowing and raise your energy.

Practice Self-Love with a Little Self-Care

One of the emotions with the highest, most positive vibrations is love. While that can totally be love for those around us, the love we have for ourselves can be some of the most impactful. That’s why self-care is so important. All of the previous tips we’ve mentioned can be considered different forms of self-care--you’re literally taking care of yourself when you do these things! But sometimes you deserve something even more special.
